First of all, one should know about the history of Embroidery.

What Is Embroidery?


Embroidery is one kind of folk art that is created by hand with a needle-thread. It has been used worldwide to embellish textiles for decorative purposes. It has two different kinds. So the history of Embroidery goes here,

Folk Embroidery

and

Sophisticated Embroidery.

Folk Embroidery: Nakshi Kantha is one of the best examples of Folk Embroidery. Locals used to make various designs, words, flowers, birds, etc. with different colored yarns in Nakshi Kantha. Some of the nakshi kanthas were square, some were rectangular. These were used for handkerchiefs, pillow covers, etc. according to their size.

Sophisticated Embroidery:
The sophisticated style of embroidery is not local, it can be said that the industry has developed on a foreign and commercial basis. The embroidery was done on muslin-jamdani etc. It was in great demand in the harems of kings, in the homes of the rich, and among the aristocracy outside the country. It took an embroiderer two and a half years to make a fine embroidery of 10 yards and 1 yard.

Origin:
The history of embroidery now begins here. So, the origin of Embroidery what is mentioned in the Bible and in Greek mythology, is yet to be found. The art of embroidery has been found worldwide and it has been said that it probably originated in China and some experts estimated as being 4,500 years old. There are various types of ruins found so far which are examples of this art. Such as the Medieval church in Europe cherished one of the greatest peaks in needlework history-Opus Anglicanum (English work).

The history of embroidery or the source of embroidery can be returned back to Cro-Magnon days or 30,000 BC. During an antiquarian find, a fossilized remnant of heavily hand-stitched clothing, boots, and a hat was built.

In Siberia, a minimum of 5000 and 6000 B.C. descriptively drilled shells stitched with figurative designs onto animal hides were found. Chinese yarn embroidery goes back to 3500 B.C. where images delineate embroidery of clothing with silk yarn, significant stones, and pearls. Examples of lost Chinese chain stitch embroidery worked in silk yarn have also been found and went to the Warring States period (5th-3rd century BC).

 

Why Embroidery is a favorite craft?

Hand embroidery is very famous and most acceptable more than any other crafts because of its decorative expectation
as well as its ability to connote status. As we know there are many kinds of designs, words, flowers, birds, etc. with
different colored yarns, etc. It flourishes one’s outfit or accessories.
